SMART SCREENSAVERS
You had to buy early screensavers - until it dawned on marketers that these are the most intrusive form of self-promotion ever. If potential customers are prepared to run subliminal messages on their screens while computers are idle, then who's to argue? Why not give them a free screensaver? The basic idea was to animate a logo and incorporate it in visual graffiti. But fierce competition for empty screens means you ought to be smarter. Mesmerising animations needn’t be dumb. For example, reading the date on the computer a smart screensaver can provide timely announcements (quotes, conferences, fixtures, etc) with optional advance countdown alerts. (Variations allow users to add diary data). Or a web linked newsfeed that selectively displays information. For other idle moments an ongoing brain teaser may be the answer? Screensavers can be made to run on PC and Mac and install with just a few clicks.
